Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic brain condition that affects between five and 11 percent of children. ADHD is characterized by difficulty paying attention, inability to control behaviors, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
ADHD is often diagnosed at an early age with the average onset age being seven years old. The disorder affects boys more often than girls and often continues into adulthood.
How is ADHD treated?
When people think of treatment for ADHD, a variety of medications come to mind. Ritalin and Adderall are among the most common stimulants used in treating this disorder.
Because of the frequency at which ADHD is diagnosed, many children receive treatment through their primary care givers or pediatricians. However, as a brain disorder, it is also effectively treated by mental health professionals, who are more likely to use alternatives to medicine in treating the disorder.
Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness practices have been used by mental health professionals working with children with ADHD. Art and music therapy can also help children to focus, control, and express their energy through both structure and creativity. These methods may be supplemented with medication depending on the individual’s needs.
