Bullying in Schools

“The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts.”

Bridgewater, N.J. (September 13, 2013) –About 30% of students in the United States are involved in bullying on a regular basis either as a victim, bully or both.

According to Stopbullying.gov, “Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.” The most common forms of bullying are verbal, cyber, and text messaging. In recent years, bullying has become such a big issue in many school districts. This is probably due to the fact of the increase in teen suicides caused by bullying. Big cases such as Amanda Todd and Tyler Clementi have shown Americans that bullying is a huge problem. Schools have now adapted “anti-bullying” policies that are created and operated by a designated anti-bullying coordinator (counselor).

There have been several cases where bullying victims killed themselves because the bullies told the teens that if he or she would kill him or herself that no one would care and the world would be better without them. One of the main problems with bullying are that parents still see bullying as a basic act that kids will do without any harm. This can be true. However, parents need to know that there is a distinct difference between playing and bullying.

If you or someone you know are being bullied, please report the incident to your school officials or parents. For more information on bullying in schools visit: http://www.stopbullying.gov/prevention/at-school/index.html
