Date Rape Drugs

“About 25% of women report that drugs were a factor in rape.”

Bridgewater, N.J. (October 21, 2013) – Date rape drugs are colorless, tasteless and odorless substances that can easily be slipped into beverages undetected.

According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), “Club Drugs” were given their name because of their association with parties, concerts and raves. These drugs are also known as “dance drugs” because they produce a trance state or happy, relaxed feelings.

There are several types of date rape drugs. Some include Ecstasy, Ketamine, Rohypnol (roofies), Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Chloral Hydrate, Fentanyl and Oxycodone.

The main effects of date rape drugs are loss of consciousness and amnesia. These two side effects combined are what causes the rape victim to become unaware of what is going on and also, forget what happened following the date. This explains why the majority of date rape cases are undocumented.

How to protect yourself:

  1. Drink from a non-open bottle or can; open it yourself.

  2. Watch closely while your drink is being prepared.

  3. Do not drink from group drinks such as punch bowls.

  4. Never put your drink down.

If you think you’ve been drugged, do not be afraid to seek medical attention.
