Depression and Suicides

“But in the end one needs more courage to live than to kill himself”

Bridgewater, N.J. (August 26, 2013) – Over 90% of people who die by suicide have clinical depression or another diagnosable mental disorder.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Suicidal behavior is complex. Some risk factors vary with age, gender or ethnic group and may occur in combination or change over time.”

The risk factors of suicides are:

  • One or more prior suicide attempts

  • Family history of mental disorder or substance abuse

  • Family history of suicide

  • Family violence

  • Physical or sexual abuse

  • Keeping firearms in the home

  • Chronic physical illness, including chronic pain

  • Incarceration

  • Exposure to the suicidal behavior of others.

Suicides can be 100% prevented. If you or someone you know are suffering from suicidal thoughts, please seek immediate attention.
