Introduction to Medication-Assisted Detox

Appointments: (855) 436-7792 | Request Form

When we think about treating addiction, the use of medication might seem counter-effective. How can taking drugs help someone stop taking drugs? This question is valid.

And yet, the use of recovery medications such as Methadone, Suboxone, and Vivitrol is proven to be the best practice in medically treating addiction.

These medications help with two things:

  1. Easing withdrawal symptoms that commonly discourage individuals from completing detox

  2. Preventing an individual from achieving the effects of drugs or alcohol if s/he tries to use during detox

Withdrawal Medications

At GenPsych, we use two different withdrawal medications based on the individual and his/her needs:

1. Suboxone (buprenorphine)

Suboxone is the name brand for the medication buprenorphine. It comes in the form of a dissolvable sheet that is taken orally each day. Suboxone blocks the effects of opioids, preventing the client from getting high, and is used to treat addiction, not as main medication.

2. Vivitrol (naltrexone)

Vivitrol, which is the name brand for naltrexone, also blocks the effects of an opioid or alcohol but comes in the form of a shot that is injected monthly. Because it is administered by a practitioner and lasts for a full month, there is less reliance on the client to remember or choose to take it daily (as is the case with Suboxone).

Medication- Assisted Treatment & Detox at GenPsych

At GenPsych, we utilize Suboxone and Vivitrol in our Ambulatory Detoxification Program and are able to administer these medications as needed after treatment and for applicable outpatient clients. Medication management is available for all substance abuse clients (as is deemed necessary) in our Detox, Partial Care, and Intensive Outpatient programs.
