Male Anorexia: It’s Just as Hard to be Ken as it is to be Barbie

Bridgewater, N.J. (July 29, 2013) –1 in 10 cases of eating disorders involve men.The term “manorexic” is referred to a man who suffers from anorexia nervosa.

Out of 3,000 people with anorexia and bulimia, 25% were men. There has been a myth for many years now that men do not suffer from eating disorders.

The potential factors that cause women to have eating disorders are also present in males. Factors such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety are all major contributions to a male eating disorder. Kristin Laird, Eating Disorder Program Coordinator at GenPsych PC stated, “Males with eating disorders tend to be less spoken about due to shrouds of secrecy and shame because eating disorders are widely known as a female problem.”

Another contributing factor to silence of male eating disorders is society is willing to accept an overweight man rather than an overweight woman. Therefore, weight issues in males are never a societal concern.

Unfortunately, there are a lack of therapy groups and treatment centers that are designed for men. However, GenPsych, PC, provider of top quality outpatient psychiatric and substance abuse services, stresses the importance of eating healthy. GenPsych offers a Healthy Eating and Living (HEAL) Program where certified counselors and doctors work closely with patients to develop a more sacred relationship with food and your body.
