Mental Health Awareness: People experiencing a mental illness might often be in dire need of help. They might even realize this fact and know exactly where to turn for help. However, some might be weary to seek help because of stigma against mental illnesses.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five American adults in The United States is experiencing mental illness. Many people would like to seek treatment but are afraid of what others might think of them. Avoiding seeking help comes from the negative perception of mental illness by those around us and in the general public. Because people don’t seek help, mental illness often manifests into addiction. Also according to NAMI, about 10.2 million Americans experiencing a mental illness also suffer from an addiction.
Sue Aberholden of NAMI states that discrimination of mental illnesses is what causes many people to avoid seeking help, and this can often lead to unemployment or even death. NAMI states that 90 percent of suicide deaths have an underlying mental illness. By accepting mental illness as something many people experience, we can end discrimination and get people the help they need.
