Mental Illness: 3 Facts That Will Change The Way You Think

Mental Illness Facts

Since the end of Mental Illness Awareness week is approaching, we wanted to share a few facts about the topic. We here at GenPsych treat people with a wide range of mental health issues such as bipolar, depression, eating disorders, anxiety and more. Mental illnesses can often lead to other issues such as an addiction, and we also treat people with addictions.

These are some extremely helpful and eye-opening facts about mental illness that we should all keep in mind. These facts are brought to us by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and you can click here for more mental health statistics.

1. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year.

While this is a large fraction of the country, this is a substantial amount of Americans. We’ve shared this fact in the past and want to make sure we share it as often as possible. Just under 20 percent of the country is experiencing mental illness, and many of them are not seeking help for it

2. Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year.

Of the 18.5 percent experiencing mental illness, only 41 percent of them are seeking help for it. The fact that less than half of Americans with a mental illness seek help means that we need to bring to light the fact that it’s not uncommon or strange to experience something like this. Seeking help will be best for you and those around you.

3. Among the 20.2 million adults in the U.S. who experienced a substance use disorder, 50.5%—10.2 million adults—had a co-occurring mental illness.

People with mental illness oftentimes experience an addiction along with the existing mental health issue. We here at GenPsych aim to help those with both mental illness and addiction, and often these need to be tackled simultaneously so our clients can go back to leading normal, fulfilling lives.
