This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week, and the campaign theme started by the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI) is Curing Stigma. Stigma is a major reason that many people don’t seek help for mental illness, and this week we are fighting to end stigma.

Why is it important to end stigma?
Approximately 1 in 5 Americans live with mental illness. Stigma causes these people to avoid seeking help because the outside world might see their conditions as strange, abnormal and something to be avoided. If we actively work to end stigma, everyone who lives with a mental illness can begin to get the help they need.
How can you help end stigma against mental illness?
If someone you love confides in you, take them seriously. Offer to help in any way that you can. If you are experiencing mental illness, please know you are not alone and seek out help.
