In 2014, opiate and opioid overdoses killed more than 28 thousand Americans (The Associated Press). According to the CDC, 1,253 (or 4.5 percent) of these deaths occurred in New Jersey. While such statistics can be overwhelming, state and nationwide treatment for addiction is improving and becoming more accessible. (Read more about Opioid Addiction Treatment NJ below.)
The Opioid Epidemic
“The latest overdose outbreak shows just how dangerous the heroin epidemic has gotten,” reads one of today’s Washington Post headlines following 26 overdoses in just four hours in Huntington, West Virginia.
Heroin is a semi-synthetic opiate, and the ‘heroin epidemic’ contributes to the larger opioid epidemic. (Other semi-synthetic opiates include commonly prescribed drugs such as oxycodone. For more information on types of opiates, read here.)
This epidemic, which includes abuse of heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioids, is considered be the worst public health crisis in recent US history.
In NJ alone, nearly 270 thousand adults use pain relievers for non-medical purposes.
In order to address the opioid epidemic, a number of laws have been created to increase funding for opioid treatment and better regulate painkiller prescriptions. NJ has begun to see such funding, receiving $1 million in March 2016.
“The money will be used primarily for medication-assisted treatment. Heroin and opioid admissions accounted for 49 percent of all substance abuse admissions in New Jersey, the highest in at least a decade.” -NJ.com
An additional $22 million could be added to state funding under President Obama’s new $1.1 billion treatment and prevention plan.
