Oxy Abuse, Detox and Treatment

Oxy Abuse, Detox, and Treatment in NJ

“Oxy,” otherwise known as Oxycontin or Oxycodone, is a prescription painkiller that is also classified as an opiate drug. Oxy abuse can occur when an individual uses the drug without prescription, for longer than prescribed, or in doses which exceed their prescribed amount. A 2014 study by Monitoring the future estimated that 1-3% of U.S. high school students abuse oxy, placing it among the most prevalently abused prescription medications. Like most opiates, oxy is extremely addictive. Abuse of oxy can cause long-term health effects, such as liver damage. In order to break the cycle of oxy abuse, detox and treatment are necessary.

Detox Treatment in NJ Following Oxy Abuse

The detoxification process with oxy, as with any substance, involves the removal of the drug from an individual’s system. Detox treatment can be a grueling process following oxy abuse due to the prevalence of withdrawal symptoms. Such symptoms, which can be both physical (cramping, nausea, and vomiting) and psychological (irritability and anxiety), can be alleviated with medical assistance in the detox process. A doctor may prescribe medication to help an individual cope with withdrawal symptoms, and will always offer support to a client struggling to quit. Many detox treatment options are available to individuals in NJ, such as GenPsych’s Ambulatory Detox program. This program provides an individual with transportation to and from the GenPsych facility if they are interested in pursuing detox treatment. Treatment in NJ for Oxy Abuse following Detox

Following detox, it is important for an individual to pursue additional substance abuse treatment for oxy abuse. As a habit forming drug, oxy must be addressed both physically and psychologically. Where detox cleans out the body, continued treatment trains the body to no longer need or desire the drug. This process is often twofold, involving both medication and therapy. Support is crucial in the recovery process, and support from a trained professional can be even more beneficial, providing the individual with coping skills and behavioral tools to help them in their journey.
