Postpartum Depression


How can something so Joyful lead to depression?


Bridgewater, N.J. (August 20, 2013) – Up to 80% of new mothers experience postpartum depression, and emotional reaction that begins a few days to a week after delivery and generally lasts no longer than two weeks.

The feeling of irritability and restlessness are normal symptoms immediately following giving birth. However, if these symptoms last more than two weeks this is classified as postpartum depression.

Postpartum Depression can occur during the first two months after a mother gives birth. Symptoms may include:

  • Irritability

  • Anxiety

  • Excessive crying

  • Anger

  • Difficulty Sleeping

  • Fatigue

If the previously named symptoms last longer than two weeks, then the mother is suffering from postpartum anxiety disorder. Recent research has shown that 10% of postpartum mothers will suffer from postpartum anxiety disorder. The symptoms of postpartum anxiety disorder are:

  • Extreme anxiety

  • Irritibility

  • Shortness of breath

  • Trembling and shaking

  • Dizziness

  • Tingling in hands or feet

  • Chest pains

  • Restlessness
