September is National Suicide Prevention Month

During the month of September mental health organizations around the world, including GenPsych, seek to raise awareness of the long-term impact of suicide — its potential devastation on communities and unyielding ability to alter an entire family legacy. The topic may often become so overwhelming that you can feel confused or unsure where to turn to talk about your inner fears and emotions. Or, perhaps you’re concerned because you happened to hear a family member talking at home or a friend seeming to joke about it at school.

It may be helpful to start with an understanding that suicide can reveal itself in different ways. These clinical definitions provided by the Suicide Prevention Lifeline may help to shed some light and perhaps uncover answers for yourself or others you come across who may be suffering in silence.

  • Suicidal Act (also referred to as suicide attempt): potentially self-injurious behavior with a nonfatal outcome for which there is evidence that the person intended to kill himself or herself. A suicide attempt may or may not result in injuries.

  • Suicidal Behavior: A spectrum of activities related to thoughts and behaviors that include suicidal thinking, suicide attempts, and completed suicide.

  • Suicidal Ideation: Self-reported thoughts of engaging in suicide-related behavior.

  • Suicide: Death from injury, poisoning, or suffocation where there is evidence that a self-inflicted act led to the person’s death.

  • Suicide Prevention: A strategy or approach that reduces the likelihood of risk of onset or delays the onset of adverse health problems or reduces the harm resulting from conditions or behaviors.

Perhaps you aren’t considering suicide at all … but sometimes just feel extremely sad, overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted or even afraid.
