July marks eating disorder awareness month. It is important to understand that it is your body and you make the rules. Do not let the pressure of society over-rule something that is a necessity for your health. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. 24 million Americans suffer from eating disorders. 20% of those will die due to health complications or suicide.
Eating disorders are complex and well-known medical illnesses that can ultimately alter your emotional and physical health. Aside from affecting your body, eating disorders cause depression and anxiety. Not giving your body the necessary food intake can cause high/low blood pressure, kidney damage, failed organs, and heart problems.
There are several types of eating disorders, anorexia nervosa being the most popular and deadly. Some additional eating disorders are bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
