Who Will Benefit from Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the most successful and effective treatments for depression, bulimia, binge-eating, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic-stress disorder, and substance abuse.

Who Will Benefit?

The use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can help people maintain safety, manage anxiety and trauma (complex, PTSD, single and multiple events) symptoms, improve social and self-interactions, and enhance balance, presence, and control in their daily lives.

Individuals who have difficulty regulating emotions and who engage in self-harming behaviors will benefit from DBT treatment, including:

  • people struggling with management of personality/interpersonal issues.

  • trauma survivors who are in an immediate need to learn coping strategies to manage symptoms/triggers.

  • people suffering from triggers to lethality symptoms and self-harm behaviors and urges.

  • people who have a primary mental health diagnosis and also struggle with the management of various addictions/urges/intense tendencies.

  • people who are going through life transitions and find themselves unable to apply strategies already learned/built prior to treatment in our program.

  • people who are struggling with daily function and daily life stressors and find themselves at loss with how to cope with a variety of life challenges.

Characteristics of DBT

Support-oriented: It helps clients identify their strengths and builds on them so that they can feel better about themselves and their lives.

Cognitive-based: DBT helps identify thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions that make life harder. It helps clients learn different ways of thinking that will make life more bearable.

Collaborative: In DBT, clients are encouraged to work out problems in their relationships with their therapist.

Behavioral-based: DBT asks clients to complete homework assignments such as role-playing, new ways of interacting with others, and to practice skills such as soothing themselves when upset. These skills, a crucial part of DBT, are taught in lectures, reviewed in homework groups, and referred to in nearly every group. The individual therapist helps the client to learn, apply, and master the DBT skills.
