Bridgewater, N.J. (September 3, 2013) – Suicide takes the lives of nearly 30,000 Americans every year. Every 16 minutes, someone across the United States has completed suicide.
September marks National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. During this month, many organizations such as Suicide Awareness Voice Education (SAVE), Alliance of Hope, and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will join together and spread the word about suicide prevention. The main purpose of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month is to help society understand that suicide is a major problem in the United States. There will be various conferences held across the country that give people the opportunity to seek help.
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. (homicide is the 15th). The rates have tripled since 1995. Depression is one of the leading causes to suicide; 15% of those who are clinically depressed die of suicide.
